      Showtime
First and foremost I am a performer, so playing shows is where the rubber hits the road. I don't think I've ever experienced stage fright.  A hot-shot adman from Atlanta told me many years ago that fear feels the same as excitement; it's just a different perspective.  Once, I tried to share this nugget of wisdom with an anxious bandmate who was heaving his preshow butterflies into a waste basket backstage.  Not my best timing, not my finest hour--but hey, I did it out of love.

When you fly with the Bar Pilots you are free to move around the dance floor.

      Picture
The Bar Pilots are a musical group with the experience and repertoire to guide your bar patrons easily through the dark of night and glow of neon.

Back in 2007, Rob Wessels had the good fortune of opening for the Jennifer Lynn Band. That's where he met Vince Adáme, Lynn’s drummer. "I remember after playing a packed house that night at American Cowgirls, Vince gave me his card and said ‘if you ever need a drummer’.”

Fast forward to July 2010. Rob walks in to Monty's Tavern for a weekly blues jam and, by chance or fate, finds himself side-by-side with Vince, only now Vince is playing bass. The groove was unmistakable. With a sense of déjà vu at the end of the night, Vince handed Rob his card and said, “If you ever need a bass player.”

Eventually Rob did, hiring Vince to cover the bass player’s spot for a couple of gigs. “It just clicked between us,” Vince explained. “Plus, you know, it was at the Mad Greek Deli. So,

      Picture
that's always a good time.”  Led by the strong guitar and lead vocals of Rob and the compelling rhythm and tight harmonies of Vince, the Bar Pilots emerged on the spot.

Drummer, Charles Pike provides the pulse and drive while adding another lead vocal to the band, giving the Bar Pilots three unique voices. Performing as a raucous trio with a vibrant mix of southern rock, classic rock, pop and country, the Bar Pilots honor the music they grew up on, while including select current hits as well.

Injecting their sets with  roots-rock originals straight from the heart of Rob Wessels, the Bar Pilots ably navigate the tricky, neon channels that churn within the local music scene.

Seventh annual Johnny Cash tribute brought warmth on a cold night
for fans of Joshua James & the Runaway Trains

      Picture
The Johnny Cash seventh  annual tribute, featuring Joshua James and the Runaway Trains, made a stop at the Ash Street Saloon on a cold and wintry Saturday evening,  February 26th.  From the first downbeat, James and band created heat that radiated off the stage right into the eager crowd of Johnny Cash fans who then returned a warmth that only lovers of his music could.  The Trains wove through three sets taking a nostalgic trip from his start at Sun Records to his last efforts with American Recordings.  Special guests included Morgan Geer, Michael Sean Cummins, and James Sasser.

      Picture
Dressed in black, playing rhythm guitar, Joshua sang and led the evening's program while Matt  Plank channeled the distinctive bouncy lines of Johnny Cash's longtime guitarist and sidekick, Luther Perkins. Rhythm section, Vince Adáme and Kevin Majors  were masters of the train-beat.

The evening's bassist should be familiar to the more dedicated fans of Joshua James & the Runaway Trains. Vince Adáme, the Train's drummer for most of the Cash tributes,  switched axes for this year's show, filling in for Keith McCarthy.
